The Spot is an oasis where family and friends can bump into neighbors and meet new people. It is composed of three parcels on Hamilton Street, owned by City of Hyattsville.
Since 2021, folks have gathered for concerts, events, or to enjoy an ice cream cone on a summer night. Through its design and programming, The Spot supports local businesses and welcomes residents and visitors of all ages and backgrounds.
In collaboration with The Neighborhood Design Center, the City of Hyattsville engaged the community to redesign The Spot.
We hosted a pop-up workshop at Hyattsville’s Trolley Trail Day hub to learn how people wanted The Spot to make them feel and what would make them linger.
We also wanted to know how the community travels to and from the park, identify priority elements and current challenges, and understand potential park users’ experiences.
Around 265 people participated in our activities!
The resulting high-value additions to the park include bike infrastructure, shade, seating, food and eating opportunities, and infrastructure supporting programmed events. NDC then took additional feedback to heart and revised as needed. Now, with City Council approval and a local design firm on board, the future of The Spot is bright!
